Two Area Hospitals Earn Leapfrog's 2015 Top Hospital Award - 12/02/15
Bethlehem, PA, (December 2, 2015) – Demonstrating the highest standards of care, two local hospitals were named to The Leapfrog Group’s annual list of Top Hospitals. Geisinger Medical Center (Danville) and Reading Hospital received this coveted award for 2015. Widely acknowledged as one of the most prestigious distinctions any hospital can achieve in the United States, the award recognizes hospitals who are committed to Leapfrog’s vision of providing the safest, highest quality health care for consumers and purchasers alike.
The announcement came today at Leapfrog’s 15th anniversary celebration in Washington, D.C., with key decision-makers from Leapfrog's network of purchaser members, industry partners, health care stakeholders and national collaborators gathered for the occasion. Tom Croyle, LVBCH president, was on hand at the event to make the award presentations to these two local hospitals that are leading the pack on quality, patient safety and transparency.

LVBCH Announces the Release of Fall 2015 Hospital Safety Scores - 10/28/15
Bethlehem, PA, October 28, 2015 – The Lehigh Valley Business Coalition on Healthcare (LVBCH) announced today the release of the Fall 2015 Hospital Safety Scores, published by patient safety nonprofit, The Leapfrog Group. The Hospital Safety Score grades hospitals on how well they protect their patients from errors, injuries, accidents, and infections. These mistakes harm millions of Americans every year, and it is estimated that up to 440,000 lives are lost each year due to preventable medical errors.
In Pennsylvania, letter grades were assigned to 131 hospitals with 31 (or 24%) receiving an ‘A’, the highest letter grade. The only two hospitals in the entire state of PA that have received ‘Straight As’ since the inception of the Score in 2012 are two local hospitals -- Lehigh Valley Hospital and Lehigh Valley Hospital-Muhlenberg.
“Nearly 1,000 people die every day because of preventable hospital errors. The Hospital Safety Score should be the first thing patients and family members consult when faced with a planned procedure or hospital stay” said Tom Croyle, President of LVBCH. "We’re pleased to recognize the hard work and commitment of all the following hospitals serving LVBCH employer communities that scored an ‘A’ letter grade in this latest update. We encourage these hospitals to continue making the well-being of their patients a top priority and that other area hospitals will follow their example,” Croyle added.

The Leapfrog Group Releases C-Section Rates by Hospital - 10/07/15
In the U.S., nearly one in three women gives birth by cesarean section (C-section). There will always be cases where C-sections are medically necessary, but experts agree that doctors perform far too many, putting moms and babies at risk. For the first time, patients can use a single, standardized C-section rate to compare by hospital at the national level. With information on 48 states and the District of Columbia, The Leapfrog Group is building the most comprehensive source of C-section data available anywhere. Leapfrog's new website can help women and families protect themselves from unnecessary C-sections, learn about the risks and benefits of C-sections, and ultimately make more informed choices about their birth hospital.

LVBCH to End Partnership with Aetna - 09/22/15
Bethlehem, PA (September 22, 2015) The Lehigh Valley Business Coalition on Healthcare (LVBCH) is ending its long-time relationship with Aetna and as of January 1, 2016 will no longer offer Aetna’s health plan products to Coalition members. Aetna has been a “preferred partner” of LVBCH, offering self-funded, employer-designed health plans to Coalition members for more than 10 years.
The decision stems from Aetna’s choice not to participate in LVBCH’s periodic performance assessment process, which is required of all Coalition health plan partners. LVBCH invited health insurers in the region to participate in the assessment. Capital BlueCross, Cigna, Highmark and UnitedHealthcare participated. Aetna declined.
“Aetna’s decision not to participate in the performance assessment in our market prevented our comparison of Aetna against national benchmarks and other health insurers in the region,” said LVBCH President Thomas Croyle. “It is unfortunate because historically Aetna offered quality products and we have enjoyed a positive relationship.”

LVBCH Releases 2015 Health Plan Score Card - 07/28/15
Bethlehem, PA (July 28, 2015) LVBCH announced the release of its second Health Plan Score Card, a ranking of how well health plans (national and regional health insurance companies) perform on metrics-based criteria established by the National Business Coalition on Health’s (NBCH) eValue8™ process. eValue8™ is the leading evidence-based request for information (RFI) tool available to healthcare purchasers. The eValue8™ RFI asks questions to determine how health plans are managing chronic conditions, reducing and eliminating waste, ensuring patient safety, closing gaps in care, promoting consumer engagement and contributing to payment reform.
This is the second time in the last three years that LVBCH partnered with NBCH to measure health insurance performance in the region. The eValue8™ process provides health plan purchasers with an alternative to relying on health plan marketing materials. It offers information verified by trained reviewers with expertise in health plan operations and value-based purchasing. Performance can be tracked year over year, within a state, by region, or across the country.
LVBCH sent the Health Plan Score Card to its employer members in July 2015.
